Rebecca Kitson grew up in the twin ports of Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin. She has lived in New Mexico since 2003 and has been employed with John W. Lawit P.C. since August of 2006. She has a B.A. with Honors in Anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and graduated cum laude in May 2007 from the University of New Mexico School of Law. She was sworn in as a member of the New Mexico Bar Association in September of 2007. Rebecca speaks Spanish fluently and Portuguese conversationally. She will become a shareholder of the firm.
Prior to her employment with John W. Lawit P.C., Rebecca worked with immigrant survivors of domestic violence at Catholic Charities over a period of two years, specializing in VAWA self-petitioners and U visa cases. She gained valuable experience working with the immigrant community and acquired knowledge about family based immigration.
Currently, Rebecca specializes in family-based immigration cases and citizenship, including adjustments to permanent residence, visa processing, fiancé visas, naturalization and derivative citizenship. She also works in the areas of deportation and removal defense.
Rebecca enjoys educating the public about immigration through various community outreach projects and advocating for immigrant rights. She has sat on the Board of Directors of the New Mexico affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union since 2005 and currently serves as the Chair of the International and Immigration Section of the New Mexico State Bar. Most recently, Rebecca has been awarded a position as an adjunct professor of Immigration Law at the University of New Mexico School of Law and will instruct her first class in the fall of 2009. She also participates in the New Mexico Task Force against Human Trafficking and is a regular volunteer educator and attorney for ACORN.
Rebecca has spent time studying and living in Ecuador and Mexico, and served as an electoral observer in El Salvador during the 2004 presidential election. She has also traveled in Costa Rica, Canada, Australia, and throughout the continental United States.
